Pro-Hapkido F.A.Q.
Here are some of the questions and concerns we hear. Take a look and this may answer some of the many you may have in mind.Pro-Hapkido FAQs
Q: Can students from all martial arts styles compete?
A:
Yes. Many different styles find that the Pro-Hapkido rules suit their
style of sparring and we get competitors from a wide range of martial
arts.
Q: What equipment do I need in order to compete?
A:
All competitors must wear Proper Martial Arts Uniform and Belt (Short
or rolled sleeve uniforms allowed) shin/ instep protectors, Gloves (1
and 1/2 inch min. thickness on knuckles), Groin cup and Mouthpiece.
Forearm protectors optional. Female competitors must also wear groin
protector and can wear female chest protectors under uniform. All
equipment will be inspected on site. You maybe disqualified from
competition if your equipment is either unsafe or does not comply with
the Pro-HKD rules.

Q: How are competitors split up into their divisions?
A:
Competitors are put into divisions that closely match weight and rank
(Black Belts and under-belts). When necessary, to make sure everyone
gets as many matches as possible in a tournament, we will combine or
expand divisions as needed.
Check the rules page for weight class guidelines:http://www.pro-hapkido.com/rules.htm
Q: Is there a women’s division?
A:
Yes. More and more women are competing each year. Women’s divisions
start with other women competitors and the division champions can
compete against the other division champions, including men in the
grand champion division.
Q: Are weight classes very strict? Should I cut weight to get into a certain weight class?
A:
We do not recommend cutting weight as weight classes are often combined
or expanded to fit more competitors per division. Use the weight
classes as a guideline but be aware it maybe moved on the competition
date within reason.
Q: What happens if I win my division?
A:
In Pro-Hapkido tournaments division champions go into the Grand
Champion Division: a single elimination division where all division
champions compete for a chance at winning Tournament Grand Champion
title.
Q: How do I score points or win a match?
A:
1/2 point for punches / kicks and knees to body (only good strikes with
visible impact will score), 1/2 point for throws and take downs
(pulling guard doesn't count as throw), 1 point for any throw with full
control of opponent (both feet in air during throw) 1 point for any
kick or punch resulting in knock down, 1 point for submission/ tap out;
Competitor with most points at the end of the 3 min. match time limit
wins.
Q: If i tap out do i lose?
A: No. Your opponent will score a point but if you are able to continue the match will go on till the 3 minute time limit is up.

A: Matches have a maximum time limit of 3 mins. In Grand Championship division final match time limit is 5 mins.
